Want to spark a heated debate amongst parents?....bring up the topic of allowance...more specifically, should chores equal an allowance or should it be given as an entitlement?
Parents can divide themselves into one of two groups. The first group believes that chores are a family responsibility and allowance should be part of a learning experience on how to handle money. The other side of the coin are the parents who don’t want their kids to feel entitled to a weekly handout and want them to learn the lesson of pay for work.
Basic allowance should be a set amount, given on a regular basis with no tie to chores. If a child wants to earn above and beyond the regular amount put a price on specific tasks that they can choose from. Basic allowance should be given with the knowledge that the child is responsible for paying for their own certain expenses such as: trips to the mall, entertainment, and trips with friends.
However you decide to work out the tricky subject of allowance, remember that it's a tool to teach kids about financial responsibility.
